Although homeowners don’t have to do it right now, getting a tune-up for an air conditioning unit is highly recommended at least once a year, says Kris Knochelmann, president of Schneller Plumbing, Heating & Air.

“The biggest no-brainer is make sure they maintain their equipment,” he says. “And the thing that people should know about that is it does not have to be done at the beginning of the season, nor does it have to be done before you turn it on, but it is recommended at least once a year.”

Getting an air conditioner tune-up once a year can help extend the life of the equipment and help prevent the unit from quitting at an inopportune time, like when homeowners invite guests to their home during the heat of the summer, says Knochelmann.

Not only will a tune-up extend the life of an air-conditioning unit it can also save money for the customer by making sure the air conditioner is operating at peak efficiency, he says. “It’s been proven if you invest in a tune up every year you’ll actually get that money back over the year just purely in utility costs [savings],” says Knochelmann.

Another important step for homeowners to take is to make sure the air filter is cleaned or replaced frequently, he says. A clogged air filter is one of the most common problems technicians encounter, Knochelmann says.

And cleaning or replacing an air filter is also one of the easiest steps a homeowner can take to ensure their air conditioner is operating properly, he says. A good way to remember to check the air conditioner and furnace air filter is when a homeowner pays the electric bill. “I always tell them when you pay that electric bill … turn around and go down and check the furnace filter and change it or clean it,” says Knochelmann.

Another tip for homeowners is to make sure they have proper air filtration, especially for those who have allergies. One way to improve the indoor air quality is by using high-efficiency air filters, says Knochelmann. “We’ve got different air treatment capabilities so without spending a ton of money you can improve the air you’re breathing,” he says.

Homeowners should also schedule a tune-up for their furnace at least once a year, says Knochelmann. Schneller Plumbing, Heating & Air, which covers the entire Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area, also offers tune-ups for plumbing. Technicians will check a homeowner’s drains, faucets, toilets, water heater, shut-off valves and water pressure, says Knochelmann.

And scheduling a tune-up for an air conditioner, furnace or plumbing can now be done online at schnellerair.com, says Knochelmann. “What’s cool about that is that people can book their call and they can also look up their history, they can look at their invoicing, and all that is right there at their fingertips,” he says.

Another service Schneller Plumbing, Heating & Air offers is sewer lining. Instead of digging up and replacing a homeowner’s entire sewer pipe Schneller Plumbing, Heating & Air can install a liner inside the sewer pipe, Knochelmann says.

“About half the time it’s probably a better solution to go ahead and do a liner than it is to replace it,” he says. “And there’s not many of us in town that have that capability, so it’s a really nice service.”

Customer service is another area where Knochelmann says Schneller Plumbing, Heating & Air exceeds. After every service call each customer receives a personal phone call from a company employee checking to make sure everything the customer expected was performed, he says.

“And he’s not there to sell anything, he’s not there to waste people’s time, all he does is make sure that, A, did we give you what we said we would give you and are you happy?”

Many of those customers must be happy because Schneller Plumbing, Heating & Air recently earned an A+ rating from the local chapter of the Better Business Bureau. In addition, the company recently received the marketplace ethics award, known as the Torch Award, from the BBB.

The accolades have been a pleasant surprise. “The opportunity to have our team acknowledged for their great performance by being acknowledged by the Better Business Bureau has been … a really neat experience,” he says.

Customers of Schneller Plumbing, Heating & Air can also expect a great experience because the company is just the right size, says Knochelmann. “Our dispatchers know people’s names, they know who they like to have out to their home and they’re not going to wait a long time for them to get there,” he says.

In addition, each technician at of Schneller Plumbing, Heating & Air is highly qualified. “We advance our technology of our trainees and our technicians more than anybody in the industry,” says Knochelmann. “We’re always finding out the newest technology to make sure they become the best technicians possible.”

Making sure customers are satisfied has led Schneller Plumbing, Heating & Air to grow more than eight times since Knochelmann bought the business in 2011, he says. With 47 employees, Knochelmann says the company expects to generate revenue in excess of $8 million in 2017.

Schneller Plumbing, Heating & Air is one of Inc. Magazine’s 5,000 fastest growing privately held businesses in the country, says Knochelmann. The reason the company has been able to grow so fast in such a short amount of time is simple. “We’ve had just a great response from our customers,” he says.
