As the weather starts to warm in Northern Kentucky, many people are anxious to get outside in the fresh air and start home improvement projects. Others will want to start an interior renovation that has been put off over the cold winter months.
Either way, your next home improvement project may be impacted by issues with the international supply chain. That doesn’t mean you necessarily have to wait to start a project, you just need to plan ahead. Indeed, starting early may be the best way to get things done on time.
“When people get out of their homes in spring and start to do a little gardening or landscaping, they really begin to think about making upgrades in or around the house,” says Kyle Smith, who, along with his brother, Evan, represents the third generation of ownership for A&S. “But that means some products may be harder to get because everyone is gobbling up inventory.
“If you want to do a project, do a little planning and be patient. A lot of lighting fixtures and decorative materials come from overseas. Plan a project out. Think four to six weeks longer than you normally would. A lot of times it’s wise to have all your materials in place before you even start a project.
That’s especially true for an indoor project that involves tearing out existing structures to make way for home improvements, says Smith.
“Let’s say you are tearing apart a kitchen or a bathroom, or some space you use every day or even multiple times a day. Then it’s wise to pre-order your materials and have them all on hand before you ever start,” says Smith. “That way you can get your house back in order, or at least into a usable fashion, so you don’t have any lifestyle interruptions or major headaches.
“It’s not that you can’t get the materials you want. It’s just that sometimes you can’t get them in a time frame that you want. Things like that happen in the world that we live in, and I don’t see it getting better anytime soon.”
The upside is that the new technologically advanced products on the market make the wait well worth it, says Smith.
Outdoors, a favorite spring project is the installation of garden or landscape lighting, which can really add to the value and curb appeal of your home.
“Right now, the biggest trend in residential and commercial projects, indoor or outside, is LED lighting,” says Smith. “This new technology allows you to hide a fixture almost anywhere so that it is inconspicuous, and maybe even unseen. But when it comes on at night, it really does a great job of lighting up a recreational space or keeping a walkway safe.”
Like garden or landscape lighting, people are also interested in having backup generators this time of year, especially in thunderstorm season.
“We are a Winco Generator distributor,” says Smith. “There are a lot of smaller subdivisions and newer builds in our area that have underground electric, so you don’t see as many outages. But if you live in an area that has older infrastructure like telephone poles for your electric wires, it can be worth the dollars and effort to put one in.”
