The Baker’s Table brings whole-animal, farm freshness to the table

In the heart of Newport’s historic Monmouth District is The Baker’s Table, a neighborhood eatery serving rustic, seasonal cuisine. Opened in 2018 by chef and co-owner David Willocks and designer and co-owner Wendy Braun, The Baker’s Table has twice been listed as one of the Best New Restaurants in America, by USA Today and Eater.

“The food and beverage offerings are completely devoted to seasonal produce, whole animals and a 100% in-house bread program,” says Willocks. “The cuisine is inspired by the nourishing food traditions of Italy, France and the American South.”

The menu at The Baker’s Table is divided into three categories: starters, pasta and mains. Willocks says that there are quite a few standouts on the restaurant’s always-changing menu including housemade stracciatella cheese with Farmer Eli’s tomatoes and prosciutto; bucatini pasta with Dark Wood Farms collard greens, Bagna Cauda and breadcrumbs; Verlasso Farm salmon with sorrel cream, basmati rice and olive relish; and raspberry tart with sugar cookie crumbs and Chantilly cream.

As summer continues, The Baker’s Table is hosting a farm-to-table series. “Summer is a time of incredible abundance, and these wine dinners highlight some of our favorite Old World wine regions, alongside regional produce and handcrafted dishes that pair perfectly with them,” says Willocks.

There are two remaining events for the farm-to-table summer series at The Baker’s Table. The Alsace & Sausage Wine Dinner is July 28 and the Summer Brunch will be held Aug. 21.

The Alsace & Sausage Wine Dinner features a selection of Alsatian wines from Marcel Deiss paired by local sommelier with French/German cuisine. The Summer Brunch is a four-course summer brunch inspired by the season and featuring a mix of old favorites and new creations. Reservations are required for the farm-to-table summer series events.

The menu, combined with the restaurant’s summer series, makes it a unique place in a thriving food and beverage industry. And in a world where freshness and quality are often pushed to the wayside in order to accommodate more diners, The Baker’s Table has a focus on hand-crafted, Old World food.

“We offer a dynamic Prix Fixe menu, which takes much of the thinking and guesswork out of the dining experience and enables guests to make a few simple choices while allowing an incredible meal to unfold,” adds Willocks.
