Colorful species, vibrant schools and more at the Newport Aquarium

Dive into the ocean this week with Newport Aquarium’s newly opened Coral Reef Tunnel. This impressive underwater display features a 60,000-gallon tank filled over 50 species with vibrant, bright, and colorful schools of tropical fish. Plus, this exhibit features exotic and intriguing coral that will have you mesmerized all day long.

According to Newport Aquarium, this “vibrant exhibit is a reminder of how important it is to protect the ocean’s corals since they provide for all the aquatic life that calls the reef their home.”

Guests can walk through a 360-degree tunnel and experience the beauty and wonders of the local coral reef inhabitants. Keep your eyes peeled for angelfish, putterfish, and even a Bluespine unicornfish.

“We’re always proud to bring something new and improved to the region,” said Newport Aquarium’s executive director Rebecca Foster in a press release. “This is the spectacular coral reef that Cincy deserves and it’s also a great chance for us to educate the community about the importance and plight of coral reefs in the wild.”

Newport Aquarium said, in the release, that the coral reef tank was specifically designed and manufactured to replicate the “specialized structures that provide the ideal living conditions for the fish.” “Most corals today are thousands of years old, and even predate dinosaurs,” said the aquarium. “Pollution, warming waters and other man-made problems are killing coral off in record time and numbers and harvesting the amount of coral displayed in the exhibit would exhaust any natural habitat.”
