Salt Festival Returns to Big Bone

Salt Festival Returns to Big Bone

42nd annual festival brings history and bluegrass Oct. 16-18

Big Bone Lick State Historic Site goes back in time this Oct. 16-18 with the return of the annual Salt Festival.

Back for its 42nd year, the festival features demonstrations of European settler living and skills, a crafters’ corner with unique and handmade items, a food court, live bluegrass music, prehistoric artifacts and more. Returning this year, the festival will also include an indigenous drum and dance circle on all three days.

Those with kids should make sure to check out the children’s area. There, the little ones can enjoy a petting zoo, haybale climbing, pony rides, pumpkin painting and games. A pumpkin is included with each children’s ticket.

A shuttle service will take visitors to and from the festival field. The site’s other attractions will also be open during the festival, such as the visitor center and museum. You can also go view the park’s bison herd.

Tickets are free for those 5 and under, $5 for those 6-12 and $10 for ages 13 and up. The festival will run 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
