 A Purrfect Day in Covington

Get your coffee and cat fix at the same cafe while supporting feline adoption efforts.

What do you get when you combine cats with coffee? The answer is Purrfect Day Cat Cafe. Founder, and Purrprietor, Chuck Patton was inspired to open such an establishment after a visit to Charleston, South Carolina. “I ran into a cat cafe called Pounce,” he explained. “The space was creative, so many people were there to support and they were helping adopt out so many cats. Having just sold my advertising agency, and as an animal lover who wanted to start a business with a purrpose, I thought this would be the perfect outlet to make a different.”

Today, Purrfect Day Cat Cafe is an adoption center meets tavern and coffee shop. “Purrfect Day is where the Tri-State’s most eligible felines go to meet their potential furrever family,” said Patton. “Our cafe partners with one of four local shelters from all around our community to help socialize cats and kittens, and ultimately get them adopted. Even if you are not adopting, you can be a part of the mission and solution by coming by to support.”

Patton, a Northern Kentucky native who wanted to make an impact on the region’s homeless animals and shelters where he grew up, partnered with Paws Recue of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; Cincinnati Animal Care in Hamilton County; Kenton County Animal Services and the League for Animal Welfare on Cincinnati’s east side.

In the 2 years since Purrfect Day opened its doors, the facility has adopted out over 2,000 cats to their forever homes. Patton credits the cafe’s team members who he said are mission-minded with a passion for helping cats and kittens.

Those who visit the cafe and may be potential adopters are able to meet the cats and kittens in a large, open room that is separate from the bar and lounge area. “The fee to go into our room for an hour is $15 and, should you find a match, adoptions can be completed same-day in most cases,” he said. “The advantage of the cafe model is that cats are highly socialized and not in cages, allowing their true personalities to be seen. This allows adopters to better match a cat or kitten with your household.”

In addition to the feline friends at Purrfect Day Cat Cafe, the menu itself is also enjoyable. Patton said that the menu includes pastries and sweets including the Pawpkin scone, a hot Purretzel, cat-themed crispy treats and cookies. “We serve freshly brewed drip coffee, specialty drinks with names like the Smelly Cat, and Meowcohol such as Meow-mosas, Purrbon drinks, Meowgaritas and local beer collaborations such as the Calico Stout from Darkness Brewing and the Beer Kitty Kitty from Braxton.”

Purrfect Day Cat Cafe is located at 25 West 8th Street, directly behind Braxton Brewery and a block away from Hotel Covington. The space, he said, is in an early 1900s restored carriage manufacturing space . “Our focus at Purrfect Day Cat Cafe is on the experience and embracing the community’s love and support of our pets and homeless strays,” he added.

For the year ahead, Patton said that Purrfect Day is looking to increase their adoption impact, add more events, finish the outdoor space in the summer and generate more community involvement.
