Upgrade seasonal decor with these simple tips

Now that temperatures are rising, it’s time to shake off the cozy cabin vibes from winter and give your home a fresh, vibrant look for spring. Here to help with some tips is Danielle Harris, interior designer and co-owner of JLH Customs, a home renovation company in Erlanger.

The good news is it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg to achieve a home glow-up. “Updating small things like pillows and throws to reflect bright color and lighter fabrics is always a simple, inexpensive way to freshen up your space for the warmer months,” Harris says. “Even changing out candle scents to reflect the season sets the tone of your home!”

Those who would like to invest a little more into their spring setting can find some affordable options, as well. Harris has one tip that might be a bit controversial, but hear her out: “If you want a more impactful update…wallpaper is never a bad idea!”

Cue the record scratch around effect—that’s right, wallpaper has made an incredible rebound into interior design. Unlike the staid flower patterns that rocked Granny’s walls, today’s wallpaper is all about making a statement.

“Choosing a key accent wall and a paper that will allow for texture and bold color to the space will be a huge transition,” she says.

Not ready to whip out the paste? Harris has another idea to roll out to homeowners looking to make bold changes underfoot. “Updating area rugs can be a bit of an investment, but will really liven up a room,” she says.

Harris says while there are many right ways to reset a room, be wary of pitfalls that can turn your home from awesome to awkward.

“When you are updating your home, it’s important to avoid items that are ‘too trendy’ with big investment pieces,” she says. “Keep those unique and trendy looks for smaller investments so you don’t have to rip a backsplash out in a year when the trend is out.”

Regardless of whether you choose a few small pieces or invest time and money into rugs or wallpaper, Harris’ advice is to remain focused on each space for a consistent decor glow-up. “Anytime you’re updating a home, my biggest advice for my clients is to focus on one space and finish it,” she says. “Don’t piecemeal your home by painting in one room, updating a rug in another, and getting a new light for yet another room. Instead, focus on completing one whole space; you’ll feel much more accomplished and inspired to tackle the next room with ease!”
