Covington scores federal funding for a major project
Covington Mayor Ron Washington has secured $4.5 million in federal funding to support major infrastructure improvements along the city’s Central Riverfront, a key step in long-planned redevelopment efforts, according to the City of Covington.
City officials said the funding will help construct public infrastructure designed to support future mixed-use development near the former Internal Revenue Service site. Planned improvements include a parking garage, a public podium structure and a land bridge that will connect neighborhoods to the riverfront.
Washington called the funding a significant investment in Covington’s future and said the project is intended to improve public access and economic growth along the Ohio River.
“This federal investment allows us to continue building momentum along our riverfront,” Washington says. “It positions Covington to attract development, create jobs and provide new public spaces for residents and visitors.”
City leaders said the infrastructure improvements are designed to support additional private development planned for the site. The podium will provide elevated public space while the proposed land bridge is expected to improve pedestrian and recreational access linking surrounding neighborhoods to the riverfront area.
Officials said the funding reflects continued collaboration between local, state and federal partners. The Central Riverfront project has been a priority for Covington leaders, who view redevelopment of the former IRS property as one of the largest economic development opportunities in Northern Kentucky.
City officials emphasized that the improvements will focus on long-term community benefits, including increased public green space and enhanced accesibility to the riverfront.
The funding announcement marks another milestone in Covington’s broader effort to transform underutilized riverfront land into a vibrant mixed-use destination. City leaders said additional project details and timelines will be announced as development plans continue to move forward.
