Kick off festival season with the Smoke on the River BBQ Fest in Newport
Smoke on the River BBQ Fest will return to the riverfront May 8–10, bringing a full weekend of barbecue, live music and good vibes to the banks of the Ohio River.
Held at Newport Festival Park in Newport, just across from downtown Cincinnati, the three-day event is a kickoff of sorts for the region’s early summer festival calendar. The annual fest gathers pitmasters and food vendors from across the tri-state, serving up a wide range of barbecue styles, everything from slow-smoked brisket and ribs to pulled pork and creative sides.
Beyond the food, the festival leans heavily into atmosphere. Live music runs throughout the weekend, with local bands taking the stage and creating a steady backdrop for crowds moving between vendor booths and riverfront seating areas.
In addition to the food, the setting itself is a draw of the festival, offering open views of the Cincinnati skyline and the Ohio River to enjoy while enjoying some of the regions best barbecue.
Admission is free, making it an accessible option for families and groups looking to spend time outdoors. Food and drinks are available for purchase, with menus ranging from classic barbecue plates to desserts and festival fare.
