The cities of Dayton and Bellevue, near Newport, offer all the charm needed for a day out 

While the riverfront cities of Covington and Newport may get most of the attention for those looking for a neighborhood to pass the afternoon in, there are plenty of other river-front neighborhoods with places to shop, eat and relax. Just east of Newport, the cities of Bellevue and Dayton offer compact business districts and riverfront access.  

Much of Bellevue’s activity centers on Fairfield Avenue, a corridor lined with locally owned restaurants, bars and retail shops. Storefronts such as Le Sorelle carry clothing, gifts and home goods. Meanwhile, lunch and dinner options in Bellevue range from casual to full-service dining.  

Tulum, for example, offers Mexican fare and cocktails, while Fessler’s Pizza & Hoagies has been a neighborhood staple for decades, serving pizza and sandwiches. For a nightcap, Three Spirits Tavern focuses on bourbon and craft cocktails and participates in Northern Kentucky’s B-Line bourbon trail. 

A few blocks away, Bellevue Beach Park provides riverfront green space with walking paths and views of the Cincinnati skyline. The shoreline trail continues east into Dayton, connecting the two communities along the water. 

In Dayton, the business district is smaller but includes Tuba Baking Co., a bakery and café known for pastries and desserts, along with beer and wine service later in the day. Residential streets in both cities feature a mix of historic homes and river views and a public park provides additional access to the waterfront.  

Together, Bellevue and Dayton provide a concentrated stretch of dining, retail and outdoor space along the Northern Kentucky riverfront perfect for an afternoon or evening out.
