Purple Poulet Pairs Southern Flavors With Kentucky Traditions

Located at 846 York Street, Purple Poulet’s location connects to the history of dining in Northern Kentucky. The Green Derby operated in the same building for more than half a century. The Green Derby first opened in 1947 and was known for its dishes, including a fish sandwich and coconut cream pie. Today, the restaurant is led by Chef Richard Zumwalde, who has designed a menu that combines Southern cooking with locally sourced ingredients. 

Purple Poulet has received attention from regional and national outlets. The restaurant’s fried chicken was nominated for Best Fried Chicken at NKY Magazine’s Best of NKY 2025 and Southern Living highlighted the restaurant in its roundup of notable fried chicken across the United States. Other offerings include shrimp and grits, voodoo shrimp, country-fried tenderloin with redeye gravy and ribeye pepper steak. Meanwhile, the atmosphere of the restaurant varies from room to room. With dining rooms like the Charleston Room, Mint Julep Room and Speakeasy Room, each offering its own distinct décor.
