Family-run Arawan Thai Sushi serves up Thai classics in Cold Spring
While Arawan Thai Sushi may have opened in the heart of pandemic—July 1, 2020—the family that runs it finds joy in serving customers food that keeps them coming back for more.
Arawan Thai Sushi is an Asisan restaurant in Cold Spring that specializes in Thai food, sushi and some Chinese dishes.
“I grew up here in Campbell County and Northern Kentucky,” explains Arawan Thai Sushi owner Putshalida Meeprawat. “I have always wanted a Thai and sushi restaurant in our area.”
The business gets by with help from Meeprawat’s family members. She cooks all the Thai dishes while her older brother is a sushi chef.
“Due to staffing issues, our retired parents are also helping us right now,” she says. “Mom is in charge of the appetizers, soups, salads and curries. Dad is packing to-go orders and prep, and our younger brother helps us during dinner, after he’s off from his full-time job, taking phone orders and payments out front.”
The menu at Arawan Thai Sushi is fairly simple, and includes popular dishes such as Pad Thai, fried rice, Pad See Ew, Arawan noodles, Massamun curry and red curry. Other popular dishes from Arawan Thai Sushi include sushi rolls like Sunday Morning, Shrimp Tempura Roll and Fantasy Roll.
Arawan Thai Sushi and its team use their over 60 years of combined experience in the restaurant industry to provide diners with a quality experience.
“I have worked mostly in corporate dining and catering,” says Meeprawat. “My parents and older brother have worked for Jo An Japanese Restaurant for eight years and trained with real Japanese chefs. My mom and older brother have worked at a few Thai restaurants such as the original Teak when they were in Mt. Adams.”
Both brothers in Meeprawat’s family once worked as sushi chefs at Mai Thai Restaurant in Florence before they collectively opened their own eatery.
“We have worked with amazing people and restaurants in the past for so many years, and I think that’s pretty unique to have a whole crew with this many years of experience in different types of cuisines,” she adds.
Although they haven’t run their restaurant in anything but unprecedented times, Meeprawat says that she enjoys having the opportunity to cook for her customers and to see them continue coming back. She’s looking forward to the future for her business, but for now is focused on getting through current issues such as supply chain problems and staffing shortages.
“For now, just the fact that people enjoy our food, even in to-go containers, makes me happy,” she says. “I just can’t wait to be able to open for dine-in so everyone can enjoy our food right out of our kitchen because certain dishes just aren’t the same out of a box.”
